Marchisio: ‘No Italian clubs had faith in Bruno Fernandes…’

Claudio Marchisio was disappointed by Rodrigo De Paul’s exclusion from the Champions League clash against Manchester United and suggested no Italian clubs had faith in Bruno Fernandes.

The Portuguese midfielder spent five years of his career in Italy, spending a year with Novara before short spells with Udinese and Sampdoria. He eventually made the move over to Sporting, where he attracted the attention of Manchester United. Now, he’s a household name around Europe, being one of the Premier League’s best midfielders.

Speaking to Amazon Prime ahead of tonight’s Champions League match between Atletico Madrid and Manchester United, Marchisio first discussed De Paul’s exclusion from the match.

“De Paul has made important growth, once a forward he’s now a midfielder. The coach is not misusing him. It’s a pity not to see him on the pitch right away, but he’s confirming his growth this year too.”

The former Juventus midfielder then gave his thoughts on Bruno Fernandes and his time in Italy.

“It would have been nice to see him in a big Italian club. In Udine he was limited by Di Natale, then he did well in Genoa but no one had faith in his talent, which exploded in England.”

Fernandes made 119 appearances in Serie A across his five years in Italy, scoring 15 goals and providing 14 assists. It is still the competition that he’s made the most appearances in, with his second highest being the Primeira Liga at 83 games.
