Serie A | Torino 1-2 Cagliari: Mazzarri stuns old club Toro

Walter Mazzarri got revenge on his former club, as Cagliari grabbed a surprise 2-1 win away to Torino with Raoul Bellanova and Alessandro Deiola goals, plus some remarkable Alessio Cragno saves.

The Granata were still smarting over their draw with Juventus, with Rolando Mandragora suspended, Dennis Praet and Mohamed Fares injured. The Sardinians remained in the drop zone, with Nahitan Nandez, Kevin Strootman, Marko Rog and Sebastian Walukiewicz still out of action.

Vanja Milinkovic-Savic needed a double save in the opening four minutes on Alberto Grassi’s snapshot and the Joao Pedro headed follow-up.

At the other end, Alessio Cragno parried from point-blank range as a free kick found Bremer’s volley at the back post and on the corner Sasa Lukic’s volley flashed just over.

Cagliari took the lead when Toro’s defence fell asleep from Dalbert’s throw-in, allowing Grassi to flick it across the face of goal for Raoul Bellanova to tap in undisturbed at the back post.

Toro continued to push, Cragno getting to a Josip Brekalo free kick, but the Cagliari goalkeeper made a simply extraordinary one-handed save on 38 minutes to push Marko Pjaca’s volley from 12 yards onto the underside of the crossbar.

Giorgio Altare also made an exceptional sliding tackle on Brekalo when clear on goal, then Tommaso Pobega’s left-foot curler skimmed the far top corner.

Torino did get their equaliser when a free kick was flicked on and Belotti hit it on the volley at the back post from five yards.

Gaston Pereiro fired wide and Alessandro Deiola restored Cagliari’s lead, as Leonardo Pavoletti knocked down a Bellanova cross for the Sardinian native to drill hard and low from the edge of the box.
