“It is a derby, but also the semi-final of a competition Inter care about a great deal. We will try to achieve something positive from this first leg to lead us towards qualification,” Marotta told Mediaset.
Should Inter fans be concerned at the latest development after UEFA announced they were looking into potential Financial Fair Play violations?
“The fans can relax, it is not an investigation, it is UEFA monitoring dozens of European clubs in the major leagues in the light of COVID and the consequences of that economic contraction. That prompted losses, so this is a way of understanding the right parameters and adjustments that can be made going forward in football.”
The Serie A title race is wide open, with Milan and Napoli top, Inter third with a game in hand, and Juventus are closing the gap to just seven points.
“There are still many points up for grabs. We must not be afraid of ambition, we are in the Scudetto race and will challenge to the end,” noted Marotta.
“I think at this stage there are five candidates for the final victory and that includes Juventus. In fact, it would’ve been extraordinary to suggest they weren’t in the running.”
Lautaro Martinez has struggled for goals recently and seems to be lacking in confidence, which sparked speculation over his future at Inter.
“Lautaro is a young man, it’s only natural that when he doesn’t score goals, he gets more apprehensive. He needs to relax, Inter absolutely believe in him and he must find himself again with the support of the squad.”
Coach Simone Inzaghi said nobody demanded the Scudetto when he took over from Antonio Conte, so what did the club ask of him?
“Inter must always aim for the highest target and try to go all the way in every competition. Ambition is nothing to be ashamed of. The fact remains that Inzaghi is doing very well and if someone does better than us, we must take our hats off to them and admit that.
“We know Inzaghi believes in the team and in himself, so we want to fight all the way. There are moments when we have to be even more determined, work harder and find the necessary ways out of problems.”
